How Does Medicare Define Home Bound Status

The Centers for Medicare and Medical Services (CMS) advises that an individual shall be considered “confined to the home” (home-bound) if the following two criteria are met:

Criteria One

Patients must fulfill one of the following criteria:

  • Individuals Facing Illness or Injury Necessitating the Use of Support Devices (E.g., Crutches, Canes, Wheelchairs), Requiring Special Transportation, or Seeking Assistance to Leave Their Residence.
  • Individuals With a Medical Condition That Contraindicates Leaving Their Home.

If the patient meets any of the aforementioned conditions, they must also satisfy two additional requirements as outlined in criteria two below.

Criteria Two

  • There Must Exist a Normal Inability to Leave Home, and Leaving Home Must Require a Considerable and Taxing Effort.
